Love & Salt is a story that begins with Cafe Pierre, a restaurant birthed by Guy Gabriele in 1977 to bring a taste of France to Los Angeles’ South Bay. While Cafe Pierre was a beloved part of the community for nearly 37 years, in 2014, Guy and his daughter Sylvie Gabriele, now the owner of Love & Salt, closed the restaurant to bring new life to the iconic space.

Love & Salt is a philosophy: that food needs only two ingredients to be great. It’s a sensibility that informs the feeling in the restaurant and the dishes on the menu — Italian-inspired with Southern California soul. An approachable wine list and classic cocktail program similarly reflect the vibrant SoCal setting of the restaurant, located just steps from the Manhattan Beach pier.

Wanted-craved-great Italian food. Found it at Love&Salt. Atmosphere was great...we sat at the bar facing the sous chef near the kitchen. The service was personal but not bothersome. We were able to chat and hang out and eat leisurely. We ordered the raddicchio salad for appetizer, then the Rigatoni Carbonara, and the Creste di Gallo Midollo pasta with bone marrow. We finished off with tiramisu' of course. Top notch, definitely coming back.

One of our all time favorites. Cute place, great location right in MB. Food and drinks always good. If you have been here and didn’t get the chicken, go again immediately and get it! Pasta so good, especially salsiccia. We had corn ribs and that was a game changer, will get that every time now. Will keep going as long as it’s there!

We chose this for our Father’s Day dinner. Love the vibe — warm, buzzy, and very Manhattan Beach — but the menu continues to shrink when it comes to solid vegetarian options (and even more so for vegans). The pasta we ordered was decent but seriously small — not enough for one person. My salad was also tiny. The pizza, though, is generously portioned and really good. Drinks were excellent — mine was strong, Ahem. They do rotate the menu, and on past visits I’ve found more variety, especially for vegetarian diners looking for something lighter or less creamy. Reservations are a must. The three stars are lack of variety for vegetarian diners and the tiny portion sizes given the prices.

I didn’t choose this restaurant myself—a friend picked it because she’s pescatarian and the menu suited her dietary preferences. While I can appreciate that, I personally found the options a bit disappointing. I ended up ordering a salad, which unfortunately couldn’t be customized with any protein, and a small plate of olives. That said, others at the table seemed to enjoy their dishes more, so it might just come down to personal taste. I will give credit where it’s due: the drinks were immaculate—definitely a highlight of the evening. The dessert, on the other hand, was just okay. Overall, it wasn’t quite the experience I was hoping for, and I wouldn’t choose to return. However, if you take a look at the menu and it excites you, this could very well be a great spot for your palate. Just not mine.
